 ヒカリマイマイ(学名 : Quantula striata (Gray,1834))は、真に生物発光する 能力を有した、世界中で唯一の陸貝とされています。
1943年9月にシンガポールのスコット通りにあるグッドウッドパークホテルあたりで、 貝自身の明るい効果によって、初めてクマザワ氏(昆虫学者)によって発見され、 シンガポールではごく簡単に集めることができます。
 この巻貝は普通、人工的な森の芝地やごみ捨て場、コンクリートスラブの下、そして特に 雨の降った後の歩道の割れ目の中で集められます。 この不思議でユニークな発光の特性のために、このあたりでは他の陸の巻貝類と比べ、 おそらく一番見つけやすい種といえるでしょう。

 発光性の器官は、幼貝の段階(TSUJI、F.I.、1983年)に粘液状の頭部のひだ の下が黄緑色の光の閃光を発すると言われて、『羽田の器官』として知られています。
 他の珍しい特性は、成熟した貝が時にその器官を失って、再び現れないことです。
 発光についての集団的な規則性は、おそらく若い貝の集団が食べ物を見つけた 時に示されるものでしょう。
