Japan consists of an archipelago extending
approximately from northeast to southwest.
Japanese chain of islands lies off the east coast of the Asian continent.
The total land area as of October 1989 was 377688 square
km, only slightly larger than that of Finland or Italy. The four major islands
of Japan are HOKKAIDO, HONSHU, SHIKOKU, and KYUSHU.
